Traditionally, making of sindhoor is by using natural ingredients like turmeric, lime, Chandan (sandalwood) and a very small amount of mercury. Mercury helps the red colour last longer.

There are various forms of Sindhoor in Ayurveda. Traditional sindhoor is from natural ingredients of facial makeup (cosmetics). Most widely traditional Sindhoor is from turmeric and lime juice. Other ingredients include Ghee, and lime. This is also a Kumkum. Sindhoor is also from red sandal powder, saffron etc. The colour powders sold as substitutes are traditionally not sindhoor.
